How they work

All blinds are most commonly operated through the use of a wand, cords or continuous corded loop.  The cord or wand are used to tilt the slats all the way open, closed or anywhere in between.  Another cord is designated for raising and lowering the entire stack of slats.  It is important to check if all the slats are properly aligned before adjusting them to avoid possible damage.

Light Control & Privacy

Aluminum mini blinds provide excellent privacy.  You can lower the entire stack of slats to cover the entire window and adjust the slats so they are titled shut.  Mini blinds offer medium room darkening with the slats fully closed.  For bedrooms where you may want even more light control, consider routeless slats.

Options

There are several options for upgrades including cloth tapes, routeless slats, cordless operation and motorization.  Cloth tapes are meant to enhance the style and soften the look of the blind.  Routeless slats, as mentioned above, take light control and privacy to the next level, providing better room darkening.  Cordless offers easy operation and is an important safety consideration for homes with small children, as loose cords can be dangerous.

Slat Sizes

Designated sizes for mini blind slats are most often 1/2", 1", 1 3/8", and 2".  Blinds with 1/2" slats are referred to as micro mini blinds and are well suited for smaller windows.  One inch is the most common size; they are also the most versatile.  Two-inch blinds are best suited for very large windows.  The purpose of different sizes is to maintain clean style and proper function.  Too many horizontal lines on a large window are not appealing while not enough lines on a small window is also unattractive.  It is also much easier to operate the blinds when they are appropriately sized.

Gauge?

Gauge of aluminum blinds refers to the thickness of the metal slats.  There are three levels of gauges including 6, 8, and 9, all of which are intended for particular styles of windows.  Install 8 and 9 gauge aluminum blinds in rooms that get the most wear and tear.  Six gauge slats are the thinnest, and can be used in any room but are best suited for rooms with less use.

Materials

Mini blinds are available in a few different materials: aluminum mini blinds and vinyl mini blinds.  These materials are durable and able to stand up to the strains and pressures of a busy, fully-occupied household.  These materials are definitely purposed for more functionality than style, however, they still have a clean appearance with the option of a few softening accents.
